Acupuncture is part of a system of health care treatment called Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that originated in China at least 2,500 years ago. While TCM is distinctly different to conventional western medicine, it is concerned with the same basic challenges; attaining and maintaining human health and well being and its success in doing so makes TCM relevant to health care today. As one author puts it, ‘Medicine east and west: two ways of seeing, two ways of thinking.’

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine, sterile needles into specific points on the body. The needles are left in for up to 30 minutes, and only used once. According to Chinese theory, this facilitates the movement of Qi (energy) in the body, and thereby restores a healthy balance.

Other techniques are often used to assist the movement of Qi, such as the application of heat, ‘cupping’, electro–stimulation and massage. Recommendations on diet and lifestyle may also be offered to complement the effect of acupuncture treatment.
